The Work Number is a fully automated service. Please direct whoever is requesting proof of employment or income to www.theworknumber.com or call 1-800-996-7566 for assistance.

This number should be used by a “verifier” organization that needs credit or employment reference information, such as a financial institution seeking salary information to process a loan or an apartment manager seeking employment verification. The number is 1-800-EMP-AUTH (1-800-367-2884).

Verification of Employment

If you cannot find the employee's information through the telephone number or The Work Number website, contact the last department of employment's human resources office.

Obtain a resume from the applicant in consideration. Call each workplace listed on the applicant's resume; for the most accurate results, use phone numbers obtained on your own to ensure they are credible. Confirm with each company the dates the candidate was employed and what job titles they had during employment.

Some hiring managers do it themselves, reaching out directly (typically via phone) to your current or previous employers to request official verification. Alternatively, employers may use professional background screening firms and/or an employment verification service such as The Work Number® from Equifax.
