Best yarn to crochet a heart
Worsted weight (#4) yarn is the best option when you make a 3D heart, which is the Amigurumi technique. But you can use any kind of yarn of your preference for this this crochet heart free pattern. I used 100% cotton yarn, but acrylic will work too.
The brand I used was I Love This Cotton by Hobby Lobby. You will only need a small amount for a heart, approximately 0.68 oz (20 g), that’s about 35 yds (32 m).
How to yarn under to do the “X” single crochet st
I used the “yarn under” technique for this crochet heart free pattern, which is the x-shaped single crochet stitch.
Basically, the only difference between doing this x-shaped single crochet stitch and the conventional “v” single crochet stitch is that you will “yarn under” and not “yarn over”. Here is how you do it.
- To do that, insert the hook in next stitch.
- Place the hook facing down on top of the yarn.
- Pull the yarn through the stitch.
- Complete the stitch as normal.
Just Place the yarn under the hook, before pulling through, like shown in the picture below.
However, you are free to use the conventional single crochet stitch if that’s what you prefer. In my experience, the only difference in the “yarn over” technique is that the stitches will look like a “v” and not like an “x”.
See the stitches shown on the hearts pictured on this pattern. In fact, there is no right or wrong when picking one over the other. It is mostly a matter of personal preference.
Pattern notes and instructions
- The best way to crochet a 3D crochet heart is by using the Amigurumi technique. Which means you will crochet the whole piece with tight single crochet stitches.
- Make it in continuous rounds, in a spiral. In other words, you don’t join the end of each round with a slip stitch. By doing that, you won’t have a seam from joining.
- Use a crochet hook that’s smaller than the one the yarn label calls for. For worsted weigh yarn, I recommend a hook size 4.00mm (US G), or smaller.
- Count the stitches in every round to make sure your heart is shaped correctly.
- A stitch marker is recommended to mark the first stitch of each round, that way you won’t lose your count.Move it up as you go.
- Stuff the heart with fiberfill. But do not overstuff it, so the fiber won’t show through the stitches.

Crochet heart free pattern step by step
This crochet heart free pattern is written using standard US terminology.
Level of difficulty: advanced beginner
The heart is crocheted from top down. You will crochet two separate cups for the top and join them on the way down.
For the hearts pictured in this pattern, I attached dowels (craft sticks) to the bottom. However, this is completely optional. There are instructions below to close the heart without attaching the dowel.
Total Time: 30 minutes
Make 2 cups for the top of the heart
Rnd1: 6 sc in a mr
Rnd2: (inc) 6 times [12]
Rnd3: (inc, sc in next st) 6 times [18]
Rnd4: (inc, sc in next 2 sts) 6 times [24]
Rnd5-7: sc around [24]
FO. Cut the yarn, for the first piece only.Join both cups with a sc st
Join both cups together to form the top of the heart. With the hook inserted in the last stitch of the second cup, insert the hook in any stitch of the last round in first cup.
Complete a sc as usual (place the stitch marker in that stitch, that sc will be the first one of next round).
Note: you may need some sewing after joining bough cups to avoid a hole between them
Single crochet around both cups
Rnd8: Sc around the first piece, then continue to sc around the second piece [48]
Rnd9-12: sc around [48]
Start decreasing in next round.
Rnd13: (dec, sc in next 6 sts) 6 times [42]

Start stuffing here and finish stuffing as you go.

If you are not using the dowel, cut the yarn about 5 inches long. Whip stitch around the opening and pull tight to cinch and close it. Weave in the end. Stop here.
Add a dowel to the bottom (optional)
First, cut the yarn about 5 inches long, after finishing round 24, and pull the end through the last stitch so it doesn’t unravel. Don’t cut the yarn and don’t close the opening yet.
These instructions are for inserting a dowel (craft stick) to the bottom of the crochet heart free pattern. Of course, like I mentioned above, it’s optional. But it will look great for decoration. Here is how you do it.
1. First, make a cut in the fiber with a small pair of scissors. Open the scissors before inserting it and cut through to make sure you have enough room to insert the dowel (see more pictures below).
2. Next, whip stitch around the last round, getting the back loop only of every one of the 12 single crochet stitches. After that, pull the end tight enough to adjust the opening to fit the end of the dowel.
3. Now, squeeze some glue around the tip of the dowel and quickly insert it in the hole, about 2” deep. Remember, you are using hot glue, so you need to do it quickly. Hot glue dries out in a blink.
4. Lastly, pull the end of the yarn to tighten it up, then squeeze a small amount of glue to secure it to the dowel, so it doesn’t go loose. Or you could also use the yarn needle to fasten off.
Weave in the end and cut the yarn leftover.
