But before we dive into the pattern, let’s answer a few questions and go through some thoughts about the perfect yarn for this project.

Is a crochet coaster pattern easy for beginners?

Absolutely! Crochet coasters are among the easiest crochet projects for beginners. Additionally, they are small and generally made with easy and simple stitches.Basically, the only stitches you need to know for this pattern are chain, single crochet and double crochet.

Not to mention, they are so quick to make as well. This crochet coaster pattern right here takes only about 20 to 30 minutes to finish.

Why should you crochet coasters?

Coasters are great and useful small additions to any home. Here are a few useful ideas for them and why you should make them yourself.

  • Crochet coasters are great crafts for beginners and for experienced crocheters alike. Not to mention, they are perfect stash-busting projects.
  • They are so quick and easy to customize using your favorite colors to go with your home decoration.
  • Coasters make amazing crochet gifts for housewarming parties, for Christmas or any occasion you want to gift someone with something handmade.
  • They are so easy to clean. All you need to do is to toss them in the washing machine with your laundry.
  • Additionally, they are great craft market sellers as well. Generally, small projects like coasters, are the best for markets because they are quick and easy to make.

Best stitches for a crochet coaster

The best stitches for crochet coasters are the ones that don’t have textures and bumps. What does that mean? Well, it means you want your coasters to hold your cups up, without falling.

So, the basic and plain stitches will work best for them. Here are a few of my favorite stitches for crochet coasters.

  • Single crochet: this is my favorite stitch yet. You can tell by looking at the pictures in this pattern. They are beginner friendly and make chic looking coasters, like the store-bought ones.
  • Double crochet:this is the tallest stitch in this list. It’s among the basic stitches you will first learn as a beginner crocheter. Along with the other ones mentioned in this list. And they look great in round projects, therefore very good for coasters.
  • Half double crochet:this stitch is about half the size of a double crochet. And if you want to go a little beyond the basics, you can use the “crochet in third loop” technique.

The stitches we are using for this crochet coaster pattern are basically only chains, single crochet and double crochet.

Which is the best yarn for crochet coasters?

Most likely, you will be using these coasters for cold, as well as for hot drinks. With that in mind, I recommend that you use worsted weight (#4) cotton yarns.

Cotton is an excellent fiber option to absorb heat and moisture, it’s durable and so easy to care for. However, there are good quality acrylic yarns out there that will work as well.

And worsted (#4) is my favorite yarn weight for coasters because it will make nice and sturdy coasters, without looking too bulky.

The yarn used for this crochet coaster pattern

I used 24/7 yarn, which is a 100% mercerized cotton (by Lion Brand). By the way, I love this yarn because it has a variety of shades to choose from and is a high-end cotton yarn.

If you browse around my website, you will notice I usually add it to my lists of recommended yarns. I used it for myEaster Eggs free pattern, and I love how they look.

The shades I used for the coasters were Aqua, Tangerine, Ecru, Camel, Sky, Pink (I made one of each). And I used Camel for the holder.

How much yarn do you need for a crochet coaster?

The amount needed this crochet coaster pattern will be approximately 0.51 oz (14.5 g), 27 yds (25 m), for each coaster. As for the holder, you will need approximately 1.17 oz (33 g), 62 yds (57 m).

The perfect size for a crochet coaster

The standard size for drink coasters in North America varies between 3.5 inches (9 cm)and 4.5 inches (11 cm). However, you can make them as big or as small as you like.

The crochet coaster in this pattern will be approximately 4.5” (11.4 cm), if you meet gauge.

As for the coaster holder, the diameter will be 5” (12.7 cm), measured across the center of the base. And 2” (5 cm) tall.

Supplies you need for a crochet coaster pattern

Crochet coasters are great yarn scraps projects because they are small and you don’t need a lot to make them. But you are making a whole set, here is the list of supplies you will need.

  • Worsted weight (#4) yarn
  • 4 mm (US G) crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Stitch marker
  • A 26” (66 cm) long string or jute rope

Pattern notes and instructions

  • The level of difficulty for this pattern is easy. And it uses US terminology.
  • The basic skills needed for this pattern are magic circle, chain, single crochet, double crochet, fasten off, and weave in ends.
  • This crochet coaster pattern and the base of the holder are worked in continues rounds, with single crochet stiches. Meaning you won’t use a slip stitch to join the rounds.
  • It is normal that the finished coaster ruffles up a little. You can fix it by slightly pressing it with a steam hot iron.
  • The coasters will look better if you keep your tension tight. See gauge for reference and use a smaller hook if needed.
  • Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch in each round for the coaster and for the base of the holder. Moving it up as you go.
  • Chain 3 in the holder siding count as a double crochet stitch. However, chain 1 doesn’t count as a stitch.
  • The amount of yarn and sizes may vary depending on factors like tension, yarn weight, brand, and hook size.

Special Stitch Instructions

I used the “yarn under” technique for these crochet coaster pattern, which is the x-shaped single crochet stitch vs. the usual v-shaped stitch.

This will change the way the stitch looks and makes it less “holey”. Meaning, with the “yarn under”, the stitch will look like an “x”. As for the traditional single crochet, the stitch will look like a “v”.

This is optional though. You can use the traditional single crochet stitch if you prefer. However, it may give you a small variation in size.

Here is how you do the “x” single crochet stitch.

  • Insert the hook in next stitch.
  • Place the hook facing down on top of the yarn. This step is what makes the difference.
  • Pull the yarn through the stitch.
  • Complete the single crochet stitch as normal.

Here are the instructions for this crochet coaster pattern. First, you make the coasters, then you will make an adorable basket to hold them.

Total Time: 2 hours and 30 minutes

  1. Make the Coaster

Easy and free crochet coaster pattern + holder - Zamiguz (7)

In this first step of the crochet coaster pattern, you will crochet rounds 1 to 10.

    Rnd1:sc 8 in a mc
    Rnd2:(inc) 8 times [16]
Rnd3:(inc, sc in next st) 8 times [24]
    Rnd4:(inc, sc in next 2 sts) 8 times [32]
    Rnd5:(inc, sc in next 3 sts) 8 times [40]
    Rnd6:(inc, sc in next 4 sts) 8 times [48]
    Rnd7:(inc, sc in next 5 sts) 8 times [56]
    Rnd8:(inc, sc in next 6 sts) 8 times [64]
    Rnd9:(inc, sc in next 7 sts) 8 times [72]
Rnd10:(inc, sc in next 8 sts) 8 times, sl st to first st to complete this round [80]

  2. Crochet the coaster edging

Easy and free crochet coaster pattern + holder - Zamiguz (8)

Rnd11:ch 1, sl st in same st as ch1, *ch 1, sl st in next st, repeat from the asterisk across, sl st in first st to join.

Cut the yarn. FO. Weave in the ends.

Next (optional), you will crochet the coaster holder / basket.

  3. Crochet the base of the holder

Easy and free crochet coaster pattern + holder - Zamiguz (9)

Follow the instructions for rounds 1 to 10 of the coaster pattern, then continue below.

    Rnd11:(inc, sc in next 9 sts) 8 times [88]
    Rnd12:(inc, sc in next 10 sts) 8 times [96]
Rnd13:(inc, sc in next 11 sts) 8 times, sl st in first st of previous round to join [104]
Do not cut the yarn yet.

Tip: if you want the bottom of your coaster holder to be sturdier, crochet another identical round and attach them together with a round of sc sts.

  4. Crochet the side of the holder

Easy and free crochet coaster pattern + holder - Zamiguz (10)

We are making the side with 4 rows of shell stitches. Here, we are not joining the rounds. Instead, when we have 7 stitches left in round 13 of the base, we are turning and making back-and-forth rows.

Row1: ch 3, dc 2 in blo of the same st as ch 3, sk 3 sts, * sc, sk 3 sts, dc 5 in blo on next st to form a shell, sk 3 sts, rep from the asterisk 10 more times, sc, sk 3 sts, dc 3 in next st, turn.

Row2: ch 1, sc, sk 2 sts, *dc 5 in next sc st to form a shell, sk 2 sts, sc, sk 2 sts, rep from the asterisk 11 more times, this row ends with a sc on top of initial ch 3 of previous row.

Row3: ch 3, dc 2 in first sc st, sk 2 sts, *sc, sk 2 sts, dc 5 in next sc st to form a shell, sk 2 sts, rep from the asterisk 10 more times, sc, sk 2 sts, dc 3 in last sc st

    Row4: repeat row 2.
Cut the yarn. FO. Weave in the ends.
Note: Four rows for the holder will be good enough to hold 6 or 7 coasters. If you want to make your holder taller, the repeat will be rows 2 and 3.

  5. Weave in a string to finish off.

Easy and free crochet coaster pattern + holder - Zamiguz (11)

Thread a tapestry needle with either a piece of string, ribbon or jute rope and weave in and out in the last row of shells. However, you can use your fingers for this step if you prefer.
The ends of the string should come out in first and last stitches, so you can tie a knot. And this is it for your crochet coaster pattern. You are all done.
