How often do you find a great design on Pinterest, can’t find the pattern but have some sort of stitch or drawn chart? The X-Stitch is one of those drawn tutorials I stumbled across that has been a low-key obsession for me. ? I like the height of the stitch, and it’s easy to get into a rhythm with all of the loops working across a row. In being true to me, I had to tweak it a bit and add in a treble stitch between each X for a different look.

Ready to learn?

Grab some yarn and a hook to practice this stitch!

The X-Stitch will be the main feature of the upcoming X-capade Cardigan (have you seen it yet? SO EXCITED!) and more designs that I think you’ll love.

Materials Needed:

  • Small amount of yarn (less than 2 ounces)
  • Recommended hook for yarn
  • Patience ?

Abbreviations

  • YO = yarn over
  • ch(s) = chain(s)
  • sk = skip

Note

  • I use a starting treble stitch which three single crochet without ch 1 rather than a ch 4 because it creates a nicer edge for larger projects.
  • The X-Stitch covers 4 stitches, so make sure you sk 2 stitches between the legs of the stitch, or you’ll be missing a stitch at the end of the row.

X-Stitch Instructions:

  • X-Stitch: each X-St is followed by a treble as follows – YO 2 times, insert hook in next stitch, YO, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), YO, pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), YO (4 loops on hook), skip next 2 stitches, insert hook in next stitch, YO, pull up a loop (5 loops on hook), [YO, pull through 2 loops] four times, chain 2, YO, insert hook from right to left under two loops in center of the X (not under the legs of the X), YO, pull up a loop, [YO, pull through 2 loops] twice. Complete a standard treble crochet in the next st [YO 2 times, insert hook in next stitch, YO, pull up a loop, (YO and pull through 2 loops) three times].

Let’s break it down

1. Ch a multiple of 5+1. In this example, ch 16

2. Ch 4 (starting treble shown), YO twice, insert hook in next ch (see pics. 1 & 2 above),

3. YO, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook; see pic. 3), YO, pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook; see pic. 4),

This is a versatile stitch that can be used for a variety of projects by itself or with other solid stitches, like in the upcoming X-capade Cardigan. ? *shameless plug*

  4. I can’t figure out how to do the starting treble crochet – what does “three single crochet without ch1” mean, specifically? As in, where do I put the single crochets? I’ve tried several variations and it doesn’t look ANYTHING like what you’ve posted here. I love the idea of it, please help!

    1. Hi Kristine,

You make a standard single crochet in the first stitch but without the ch 1. For the second single crochet, insert your hook in the middle of the first single crochet and make another single crochet. The third one is made in the same way, but working into the 2nd single crochet. You ca also check out the stacked double crochet video by Briana K Designs. It’s the same idea as a stacked double crochet, except you’ll make a 3rd single crochet, so a stacked treble. 🙂 If you need more help, please send an email to receive a quicker reply.
